Journal #1

For the longest time, I have always wanted to have the opportunity to help animals in need. In the past I owned pets and I rescued many of them, but at this point and time in my life I cannot personally own a pet. In response to both having an assignment and wanting to aid my vegetarian community, I have decided to volunteer at the animal shelter Brother Wolf. Even though I would enjoy working with the animals themselves, just cleaning and doing upkeep at the shelter would be enough for me. In a distant way I am still helping and that is enough for me.

In my own perspective, I believed that many people would also want to ensure the happiness of animals within Asheville. As a surprise though, the shelters are actually further away and not right in the city (go figure). I understand that Asheville is not particularly what one would call and open free and dog like community. Though I wish it were true, I am still excited that I get at least a smidgen of an opportunity to do something which will truly make a difference, and not in a cliché way.

The chance to look after animals is a prize within itself, but if I do get to physically be around the animals all day I will be beyond overjoyed. Since I am a vegan, animals light up my life which is particularly why I choose to not eat them or support terrible mistreatment towards them. Going back on topic, being able to see the animals will make the whole experience more personal and will take away from any, well, unpleasant work I may have to do.

When beginning our assignment, I had the idea in mind to be around the animals and that it would be no problem to do so. Since my expectations have been slightly met and, at least for the time being, unknown I can expect that I will be surprised. I may end up with experiences which I had hoped to have and then again I may end up with scenarios which I never imagined possible. The greatest part of the entire service project is that I still get to be who I am, stand for what I believe in, and do one of my favorite past times which is write about it. Hopefully, I will learn a lot from working with the animals, learn to have responsibility for those animals, and adjust to documenting my own feelings about the event publically in a comfortable way.

  4. I love that you are working with the animal shelter, this is an awesome project. You will definitely get the change to make a difference no matter where you volunteer within the organization. Considering you would thoroughly enjoy actually working with the animals I have you get the chance to!

  5. Having the opportunity to work with animals sounds amazing. I'm a huge fan of animals myself and have previoulsy volunteered at the animal shelter in my home town. There's no greater feeling than hanging out with a dog all day just simply walking them around and playing with them. It really sounds like you are excited about this chance to work at the animal shelter, no matter the work you're going to have to do.

  6. I love animals as well, so I am slightly jealous of your volunteering opportunity. However, I feel like you will do a great job there and really enjoy it. Please write more of these great blog entrees because I am interesting in your progress.
